Väestöliitto's development cooperation focuses on promoting sexual health and rights and the provision of sexual, reproductive and maternal health services in countries with the highest need.

UNFPA has taken the lead in the global drive to mobilize political will and investment to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and disabilities.

UNFPA works to improve maternal health in 90 countries. Progammes focus on upgrading health facilities, training and supporting medical staff, including midwives, and expanding the availability of services, particularly obstetric care. Moreover, UNFPA works in 40 countries to prevent and treat the devastating childbirth injury fistula. The Fund also acts rapidly to support mothers during crisis situations.

In January 2008, UNFPA launched a new thematic fund for maternal health. The thematic fund focuses on supporting 75 countries with the greatest need.For more, please see www.unfpa.org
