The goal of Väestöliitto's development cooperation is to reach the Millennium Development Goals, especially the fifth target (MDG 5) on maternal health. We do this by promoting global sexual health and rights through development cooperation projects and active advocacy work. In addition we implement projects in Russia, conduct research and produce publications.
The goal of our work is in ensuring that every individual and couple could decide freely and responsibly on matters related to their sexuality, such as whether or not to marry, using contraception, and whether or not to to have children.
Our development cooperation projects are focused on promoting sexual health and rights, improving maternal health, reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies, improving the status of girls and women, and preventing HIV infections and other sexually transmitted infections by e.g.:
-
Through providing information on sexual health
-
By promoting access to sexual and reproductive health services and supplies for all age groups, men and women
-
By involving men in promoting sexual health
Our principles
Our work is guided by the UN's Millennium Development Goals and the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD 1994) in Cairo. We work in the poorest regions of the world where the need of aid is gratest. The basis of our projects is in partership and cooperation with local authorities. We give administrative and expert advice whereas the local cooperation partners implement the projects. |
